E-bulletin – November 2005
Welcome to our November e-bulletin which is designed to
provide an update on Russell Commission implementation in

- Small grants round launched
On Friday 4th November, Ian Russell launched a £600,000
small grants round, to fund preparatory work that will lay
the foundations for the work of the new Russell Commission
charity. The grant round aims to fund projects in two key
areas:-
- Developing volunteer involving strategies –
encouraging organisations to develop their volunteering
strategies for 16-25 year olds, so that they can increase
the number of opportunities for young people, especially
those from groups that are under-represented in volunteering
activity
- Best practice examples – encouraging existing
volunteer-involving organisations to build the evidence
base on how to reach new groups of young volunteers,
particular black and minority ethnic groups, disabled
people, faith groups and those without qualifications.

date for applications is 12.30pm on Friday 2nd December
2005. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their
bids by 22nd December.
In addition to the small grants round, Ian Russell will
also be inviting a small number of key stakeholders to
develop a capacity building programme for organisations
who will be involved in Russell Commission implementation.
We will be approaching ten organisations who have been
active in supporting the Russell work so far. Invitations
to bid will be issued in week commencing 21 November 2005.
- Over 160 young people apply to join Youth Advisory
Board
The campaign to recruit a new Youth Advisory Board has received
an outstanding response, attracting applications from over
160 young people throughout England, who are keen to help
revolutionise youth volunteering. The twenty successful
applicants will also have the opportunity to apply for four
trustee positions on the Main Board, ensuring that young
people have a key role in the governance of the new charity.
Interviews are taking place in Leeds on Saturday 12th November
and in London on Saturday 19th November 2005.
- Chair, Board and CEO recruitment reaching final
stages
Ian Russell is overseeing the final stages of the selection
of the Chair, Board and CEO for the new charity. Young people
from the existing Youth Advisory Board are also involved
in the selection process. Announcements on all appointments
are expected in early December.
- Regional events - workshop toolkits now available
Throughout October and November, over 350 volunteering practitioners
participated in Russell Commission regional events throughout
England. The events were designed to update practitioners
on implementation progress to date, as well as supporting
organisations to prepare for the step-change outlined in
Ian Russell’s report. Downloadable workshop toolkits,
outlining all the topics covered at the events, are now
available at www.russellcommission.org. The toolkits provide
helpful tips and best practice to support practitioners
in delivering high quality volunteering opportunities for
young people. Topics include youth-led volunteering, running
taster sessions, full-time volunteering, quality, accreditation
and raising money from the private sector.
