modernising government

The Government's priority for this term is to improve public service delivery and reform public services. This work is supported by the Prime Minister's Delivery Unit and the Office of Public Service Reform, both set up in June 2001 and located in the Cabinet Office, helping to create a strong strategic centre of Government. These new units together, with the Government Offices for the Regions, will help deliver improved service delivery on the ground.

Improving public services builds on the work in the first term to modernise and reform central Government. The Modernising Government reform programme was defined by the White Paper in 1998 and implementation was supported by Modernising Public Services Group in the Cabinet Office. The work of this Group is now being taken forward by other Units in the Cabinet Office (see list below) as part of the overall public service improvement programme.
