The Prime Minister has welcomed a new report aimed at delivering
more customer-focussed public services through the better use
of personal information in a way that commands public trust
and ensures effective privacy safeguards. The report says that
the ability of the public sector to deliver more personalised,
more efficient services depends on the effective use of personal
information about citizens. To realise the potential benefits
for citizens from better data use, the public sector must earn
people's trust about how their personal information is protected
and build confidence in the way it handles sensitive data. It
identifies action in four key areas:
- Building public trust, through a Public Services Trust
Charter (subject to public consultation)
- Improving data quality
- Making better use of technology to deliver more secure,
more joined-up services
- Addressing legal problems
The Public Services Trust Charter was developed in partnership
with the Office of the e-Envoy and builds on the OeE's draft
eTrust Charter which will be revised in the light of the forthcoming
consultation. The report and press release are available on
the Performance and Innovation Unit website.
