e-GIF Compliance
Assessment Service: 28 January 2003
The new e-GIF Compliance Assessment Service
is now in operation.
Adherence to electronic-Government Interoperability
Framework (e-GIF) specifications and policies is mandated
for legacy systems involved with electronic service delivery
targets and for new systems for the exchange of information
between government systems and the interactions between:
UK Government and citizens
UK Government and businesses (world wide)
UK Government organisations
UK Government and other governments (UK/EU, UK/US etc.)
To help suppliers to Government,
procurement officers and project managers perform compliance
self-assessments and deliver successful project outcomes,
the National Computing Centre (NCC), with the support of UK
online and the Office of the e-Envoy, is launching a unique,
web-based e-GIF Compliance Assessment Service.
The e-Summit was the first event of its
kind and attracted "e-Envoys" from around the world. It marked
the publication of the World's
Most Effective Policies for the e-Economy Report.
The OeE invited the benchmarked countries, other nations and
organisations, and private sector partners, to an event where
we could discuss the report's findings and share policy experiences.
The event also saw the publication of the
UK
online Annual Report setting out the Government's
e-strategy for the coming year.
Digital TV policy framework -
consultation document
The government's first version of its Digital
Television policy framework for delivering e-government services
has been launched for public consultation for a period of
three months.
The document sets out the government's vision
for DTV for the delivery of government services. DTV plays
a key role the government's programme to deliver government
services electronically alongside other channels such as the
Internet, mobile phones and kiosks.
Digital television is set to become a medium
for all kinds of communication. Reaching out to people in
their homes, it presents many opportunities for government
to improve its services and the way in which they are delivered.
It can provide greater choice in the ways to deliver information,
interact and transact, allowing Government to tailor services
more closely to citizens' needs and lifestyles.
Douglas Alexander MP, Cabinet Office Minister
of State, today helped bridge the digital divide while demonstrating
the Government's ongoing commitment to getting people
online when he attended a special training session at a UK
online centre in North London - the UK's first MAD 4
IT event.
The event is part of national
MAD 4 IT week (14-18 October), during which local business
people give up their time and technology to help Community
projects reaching out to disadvantaged groups across the UK
A new design and navigation for the UK online
interactive service has gone live on Sky digital TV following
months of hard work by the Office of the e-Envoy.
UK online interactive is the gateway
to government information and services via digital TV offering
a single point of access to central and local government services.
The new navigation serves government
information around key topics, for example learning, health,
local information and travel. This topic-based rather than
departmental approach ensures users can find information that
is relevant to them.
According to Sky Television, UK
online interactive is one of the most exciting options on
the interactive menu. Since the launch of the trial, nearly
100,000 households have used the service. Feedback has been
overwhelmingly positive.
The views of young people are
shaping the development of the government portal ukonline.gov.uk.
A research project led by the website has
been consulting and working with young people across the country
to make government information more relevant and accessible.
Students at Newport Free Grammar
School, Essex, are among the young people who have had the
opportunity to influence the style and content of a new youth
section, to be launched in November on ukonline.gov.uk. Bill
Edwards, Director of e-Communications at the Office of the
e-Envoy, met the pupils to see the work they had produced.
The group of Year 9 students at
the school spent six lessons exploring issues that concern
young people. Pupils put forward a variety of ideas including
creative campaigns on the environment and transport, and advice
for helping other young people deal with bullies and peer
pressure. They used words, art, music, drama and IT to explore
ways of representing the issues on the web.
The school-based project was developed
jointly by ukonline.gov.uk and Uttlesford District Council,
Essex, which has been recognised nationally for its work in
youth services. The project material is now being used in
other parts of the country as part of ukonline.gov.uk's work
with young people.
Government Computing Conference
2002
Andrew Pinder, the e-Envoy, at GC2002
For the second year running the
Office of the e-Envoy exhibited at the Government Computing
2002 in Islington. The stand was well visited by attendees
from central and local government, education, industry, defence,
as well as representatives from other countries.
