A new design and navigation for the UK online interactive service has gone live on Sky digital TV following months of hard work by the Office of the e-Envoy.

UK online interactive is the gateway to government information and services via digital TV offering a single point of access to central and local government services.

The new navigation serves government information around key topics, for example learning, health, local information and travel. This topic-based rather than departmental approach ensures users can find information that is relevant to them.

According to Sky Television, UK online interactive is one of the most exciting options on the interactive menu. Since the launch of the trial, nearly 100,000 households have used the service. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive (see survey results at end).

For those who live in Suffolk there is even more content available (delivered in partnership with Suffolk County Council). They are able to obtain further information about local services through UK online interactive. More local councils and government departments will follow over the coming months.

Bill Edwards, Director of e-Communications with the OeE, said of the improved service,

"We have been overwhelmed by feedback from thousands of members of the public who are positive about the service and like getting access to government services where they might not have been able to do so online.

By putting this service on a digital platform we are able to bring UK online to literally millions of homes that might not otherwise access our information and services. From the beginning, we wanted to involve the public in helping to shape and drive the content - we wanted to deliver a service that they would find useful.

Over 17,000 members of the public have taken part in a survey that is informing our thinking - UK online interactive continues to be a success and we're pleased to be progressing with phase two so quickly. Importantly, one of the most encouraging findings was that 90% of respondents indicated that they were likely to return to the service."

Survey Findings:

As part of phase 1 users were asked what sort of service they wanted in order to further develop the service. Over 17,000 people have so far responded to the questionnaire.

The main findings of the questionnaire were:

67% would be very or quite likely to apply for a passport on interactive TV
49% would be very or quite likely to book a driving test on interactive TV
51% mostly use the service for information
88% felt that the information provided was very or quite clear
90% said that they were very or quite likely to return to this service

The most popular times for accessing UK online Interactive are between 5 and 7pm and between 9 and 11pm, with the most popular days being Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

Notes to Editors:

1. UK online is a partnership between government, industry, the voluntary sector, trades unions, consumer groups and the public, forged to enable everyone in the UK to make the most of the Internet.
2. Interactive digital television (iDTV): Analogue TV converts sound and pictures into radio waves, received through aerials. This allows for a small number of channels to be broadcast over the spectrum. DTV allows more channels to be broadcast in the digital spectrum of higher sound and picture quality. Interactivity offers choices in viewing and extra information. Combined with a telephone line it can provide interactive services including e-mail, text messaging, voting, home shopping, and home banking.
3. By 2006, more households across Europe will be watching DTV than using the Internet. 78% of UK homes will have DTV by 2007 and the UK has the highest take-up rate in the world. (Figures from Jupiter MMXI).
4. Full Survey results are attached.
5. The original pilot UK online interactive service launched on Sky digital TV in mid-April. UK online interactive is platform neutral.
