What is UK online, and what can it do for me?

UK online is a partnership between government, industry, the voluntary sector, trades unions and consumer groups, to make the UK one of the world's leading knowledge economies.

  • The UK online Strategy sets out the government's programme to ensure that the UK is a world-leader in the new knowledge economy
  • The ukonline.gov.uk portal provides a single point of entry to a wide range of government information and services. Information can be accessed in a variety of ways to suit your needs, from the advance government search function to A to Z lists and topic directories.
  • UK online Centres are being set-up across the country. These walk-in high street locations will offer practical help.
  • The UK online for business website provides expert advice to help business exploit new information technologies

The Department of Trade and Industry now has the overall lead for Broadband policy. The main point of contact in the DTI Broadband team is Margaret Aitchison.

Where can I get help about getting online and getting the most out of the internet?

To get you online, organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors have joined forces with UK online, setting up centres in local communities. At UK online centres you can get hands-on experience of using the internet, discover the potential of the internet and learn and develop new skills, at your own pace and at your own convenience.

How can the internet help me have more of a say in government affairs?

The internet can enable citizens to get more involved in the democratic process. The Citizen Space section of ukonline.gov.uk enables users to take part in government consultations. The site includes information on elected representatives, elections and how to make complaints about public services.

What is the government doing to ensure security of transactions, and to build people's trust in the internet?

The government are taking a range of measures to improve consumer trust in the internet:

  • Making the internet safer for children:
    • agreeing web self-protection tips for children with the Internet Watch Foundation
    • providing a Superhighway Safety pack available to help parents support children's education through the use of ICT
  • Trust UK seeks to build consumer trust and confidence in internet trading through the online codes of practice
  • Reducing scope for online fraud through t-Scheme; a self-regulatory system of approved 'trust service providers'
  • Combating the use of the internet for criminal activity by ensuring that the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act is taken forward in close collaboration with industry.

Where can I find information about job opportunities in the Office of the e-Envoy?

You can visit the Civil Service jobs site, where full details of a range of jobs across the Civil Service can be found (including ones in the Office of the e-Envoy) or send your CV and a covering letter explaining the nature and level of work you are interested in to the Cabinet Office Recruitment Unit . They will hold your details on file for 6 months, and send you an application pack if any suitable vacancies arise during that time.
