LEADING A CROSS-GOVERNMENT
PROGRAMME
The Office of the e-Envoy is leading
a cross-government programme aimed at ensuring that everyone
who wants it can have internet access by 2005.
We work with other government
departments and a range of private and voluntary sector partners
to develop policies and help implement projects which all
contribute towards the goal of Internet access for all.
The UK has experienced strong
growth in internet take-up recent years and is now one of
the world's most 'connected' economies. In 1998, less than
10% of UK households had internet access. In the period October
to December 2002, that figure stands at 45%. Virtually all
schools are now 'wired up' and almost 95% of businesses are
online. In total, 62% of the UK adult population - some 28.7m
people - have now used the internet.
In September 2000 the Prime Minister
set the target of 6000 UK online centres by the end of 2002,
enabling thousands more individuals to enjoy the benefits
of the internet by providing free or low cost internet access
and offering support for first time users.
Speaking at The e-Summit on 19
November 2002, the Prime Minister announced that the 6000th
centre had opened, six weeks before the target date.
