Background to the Information Age government programme and key projects in getting government online

Introduction | Background | Key Projects | Contacts | Things You Can Do Online Now

Introduction

Information technology is changing our lives: the way we work, the way we do business, the way we communicate with each other, how we spend our time. New technology offers opportunities and choice. It can give access to services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is essential that the benefits of the Internet revolution are realised for the delivery of Government services. Details of the main projects being taken forward to deliver e-government are set out below.

Background

Chapter 5 of the Modernising Government White Paper sets out the Government's vision for information age government. It gives a commitment to bringing about a fundamental change in the way IT is used. The Prime Minister has set a clear target that all Government services to the citizen and to business should be available online by 2005. This will involve the transformation of access to government services and services, provided in ways which match people's needs, not government structures

Key Projects

ESD Reports

Enabling government services to be delivered electronically by 2005 is a key target within the UK Online Strategy. To drive this work forward, the Office of the e-Envoy produces a report twice a year giving details of the progress that is being made. More information.

Local Government

Getting government online applies as much to local government as central government. More information on how local government is implementing the e-government agenda.

Government Gateway

The Gateway allows users to undertake secure electronic transactions with government. Registering with the Government Gateway enables you to sign up for any of the UK Government's services that are available over the Internet.

Knowledge Network

The Knowledge Network is leading the world in enabling the UK government to work in a more efficient and co-ordinated way than ever before. The KN is linking departments electronically and giving wider access to government briefing as well as facts and figures. The network promotes collaborative working both within and between departments and develops sites for communities of interest to share information and knowledge online.

Modernising our Laws for the Information Age

Statute law specifies many requirements for writing, signatures and allied activities based on the use of written documents such as witnessing, posting, delivering etc. These are a potential barrier to e-commerce and e-government. The Electronic Communications Act 2000 introduced powers to remove these barriers, enabling things to be done quicker, better, and more efficiently and cheaply.
