David Arculus appointed new Chair of BRTF from 01/04/02

David Arculus was today appointed as new Chair of the Better Regulation Task Force by Gus Macdonald, Minister for the Cabinet Office. David Arculus, whose application was backed by both the CBI and the Federation of Small Businesses, will take up his post when the current Chair, Chris Haskins, steps down on 31 March. The appointment will be for three years and is unpaid.

Making the announcement, Gus Macdonald said:

"David Arculus has an outstanding record of achievement in business and, under his leadership, I have no doubt the Task Force can become even stronger and more effective. I believe he will do an excellent job and look forward to the Task Force building upon the reputation and success it has achieved under Chris Haskins".

David Arculus said:

"I am delighted and excited about taking up this challenge. Chris Haskins has achieved a great deal but there is still more to be tackled and plenty of areas where the Task Force can help the Government improve, or remove, regulation."

David Arculus is non-executive Chairman of Severn Trent plc and of Earls Court & Olympia and a non-executive director of Barclays plc, Geest plc (up to April 30 2002) and Oxford University Press. Until last year he was Chairman of leading consumer magazine publishers, the IPC Group Ltd.

Notes to Editors

  1. The Better Regulation Task Force was established in 1997 to advise the Government on ways to improve the effectiveness and credibility of its regulation. The Task Force works to ensure regulation is necessary, fair and affordable, and simple to understand and administer.
  2. The appointment of David Arculus was made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments’ Code of Practice and was subject to independent scrutiny.
  3. Nominations for the post were sought from a wide range of sources including business representative bodies, trade federations, the TUC, public sector organisations and women’s and ethnic minority business groups.
  4. Lord Haskins was appointed Chair of the Task Force in September 1997. He was re-appointed for a further year in September 2000. That appointment was subsequently extended until 31 March 2002.
  5. The appointments of Task Force members also end on 31 March 2002. The process of appointing a new membership is well underway and an announcement will be made in April.
